Mirissa's coastline, one headland at a time
A compact town with an outsized list of sights — most within easy walking or tuk-tuk distance of each other.
Everything sits within a few kilometres
Mirissa's attractions line up along a short stretch of coast, so most visitors see the highlights over one or two unhurried days.

Mirissa Beach & Parrot Rock
The town's main crescent of sand, backed by palm trees and a run of beach bars. At its eastern end, Parrot Rock — a small tidal outcrop reachable on foot at low tide — is the classic spot to watch the sun go down.
Coconut Tree Hill
A small headland where a cluster of coconut palms lean out over the cliff edge, framing the open ocean behind them. It's a short, free walk from the main road and one of the most photographed spots on Sri Lanka's south coast.
Secret Beach
A quiet pocket of sand tucked behind rocky outcrops, reached along a short coastal path. Smaller and calmer than the main beach, it's a good option when Mirissa Beach gets crowded.
Mirissa Fisheries Harbour
One of the busiest fishing ports on the south coast, landing tuna, mullet, snapper and butterfish. Arrive early to watch boats unload the morning catch, and it doubles as the departure point for whale-watching tours.
Sunset at Parrot Rock
Every evening, locals and travellers gather on the rock as the tide allows, making it one of the most reliable sunset viewpoints on this stretch of coast.
Sri Sunandarama Temple
Set slightly inland from the shore, this Buddhist temple offers a quieter, more local side of Mirissa — a short stop worth combining with a walk along the harbour road.
A simple one-day loop
- Sunrise at the harbour. Watch the fishing fleet return with the night's catch, or join a whale-watching boat if it's whale season.
- Late morning swim. Head to Mirissa Beach while the sea is calm, or walk over to Secret Beach for a quieter alternative.
- Lunch by the sand. Try a fish curry or grilled catch of the day at one of the beachfront restaurants.
- Afternoon at Coconut Tree Hill. Walk up for photos and shade under the palms — it's quieter once the midday heat has passed.
- Sunset at Parrot Rock. Finish the day where most of the town gathers to watch the light fade over the water.
