Mirissa's biggest draw is what happens offshore — but there's a full slate of activities for every kind of traveller.
Blue whale & dolphin watching
The continental shelf drops steeply just off Mirissa, creating a deep-water trench close to shore. That geography draws blue whales, sperm whales and large pods of spinner dolphins within a short boat ride of the harbour, making Mirissa one of the most consistent places in the world to see a blue whale in the wild.
Boats leave the fisheries harbour early each morning during the season, when the water is calmest and sightings are most likely.
- Tours typically run 3–4 hours and depart between 6:00 and 7:00am
- Bring sun protection, a light jacket and motion-sickness tablets if needed
- Choose an operator that keeps a respectful distance from the animals

Surfing at Weligama Bay
Weligama, just four kilometres west of Mirissa, is one of Sri Lanka's best-known beginner surf spots, with long, gentle rolling waves and plenty of board rental and lesson operators along the beach. More experienced surfers head slightly further along the coast for faster breaks.
Snorkelling gear can also be hired locally to explore the calmer rocky patches near Secret Beach and around Parrot Rock at low tide.

Calm, shallow rock pools at low tide make for easy, gear-light snorkelling close to the beach.
