Mirissa: where coconut palms lean into a warm, whale-blue sea

A small fishing town turned favourite escape — golden sand, blue whales offshore, and a slower pace of life four kilometres east of Weligama.

Welcome

A fishing harbour that became a favourite shoreline

Mirissa sits on Sri Lanka's southern coast in the Matara District, about 150 kilometres south of Colombo along the A2 highway. Fishing boats still work the bay every morning, even as the beach beside them has become one of the island's best-loved places to slow down, watch the horizon, and — from November to April — spot blue whales passing just offshore.

Crescent beach

Soft sand, warm shallows and a laid-back run of beach cafés.

Coconut Tree Hill

Blue whale season

Boats leave the harbour daily, November through April.

Golden sunsets

Parrot Rock and the western sands are the spot to watch them fall.

Places to visit

From a fishing harbour to a photographer's headland

Mirissa's short coastline packs in a lot: the main beach and Parrot Rock, the tilted palms of Coconut Tree Hill, the tucked-away cove known as Secret Beach, and a working fisheries harbour that still supplies tuna, snapper and mullet to the town's restaurants.

  • Mirissa Beach & Parrot Rock — swimming, sunset viewpoint
  • Coconut Tree Hill — the town's most-photographed headland
  • Secret Beach — a quiet cove reached on foot
  • Mirissa Fisheries Harbour — early-morning boats and the daily catch

Signature experience

One of the most reliable places on Earth to see a blue whale

The waters off Mirissa drop into a deep offshore trench that draws blue whales, sperm whales and pods of spinner dolphins close to shore during the dry season. Half-day tours leave the harbour early each morning between November and April, when the sea is calmest.
